Anambra Government Orders Residents to Repaint Buildings or Face Penalties

Anambra has ordered property owners to repaint buildings by July 1 or face sanctions.

The initiative aims to boost urban aesthetics and support Governor Soludo’s clean city vision.

The Anambra State Government has directed all property owners across the state to repaint their buildings as part of efforts to improve the state’s physical appearance and promote a clean and organized environment.

This directive was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, who explained that the repainting initiative is part of Governor Charles Soludo’s plan to transform Anambra into a modern and attractive city. The state aims to combine cleanliness, beauty, and environmental responsibility as key elements of development.

According to the announcement, residents must repaint their buildings before July 1, 2025, or risk facing sanctions. The order is supported by the Anambra State Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law, passed earlier in 2024. A public notice dated June 17 stated that government inspectors will begin visiting major towns like Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Nkpor, and Ekwulobia to check compliance.

The commissioner noted that the exercise will help improve the overall look of neighborhoods and ensure buildings are properly maintained. Properties that have not been repainted in over ten years, or those with peeling or faded paint, will be the main focus, especially those facing public roads or markets.

Dr. Odimegwu emphasized that the law empowers the Ministry of Environment to take action to enhance the state’s appearance and encourage urban renewal. He appealed to residents and business owners to support the government’s efforts by repainting their buildings promptly.

Failure to comply with this directive will result in penalties as outlined in the environmental law.
