FG Suspends Two Correctional Officers Over Passport Application Attempt for Inmate

Two correctional officers have been suspended over an illegal passport attempt for an inmate in custody.

Authorities say reforms and digital tracking systems helped uncover the serious breach of protocol.

The Federal Government has taken disciplinary action against two officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) over their alleged involvement in a botched attempt to obtain an international passport for an inmate in custody. The incident, described as a serious violation of protocol, has prompted their suspension pending further investigation.

The development was made public through a statement released on Saturday by the Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, Deputy Controller of Corrections, Umar Abubakar. He explained that the misconduct was uncovered thanks to recent reforms and automated systems introduced within the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which flagged the irregular application.

According to Abubakar, the incident was discovered approximately two weeks ago through the combined efforts of multiple agencies operating under the Federal Ministry of Interior. The collaboration and integration of technological solutions played a vital role in detecting the attempt, which clearly contravened existing laws and operational procedures.

“This act of misconduct was detected through the automated passport application process and other reforms being carried out by the Nigeria Immigration Service. The attempt was in clear violation of regulations and is totally unacceptable,” Abubakar stated.

He noted that the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, chaired by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, took swift action following the revelation. As part of the disciplinary measures, the two implicated officials have been suspended from their positions within the Correctional Service.

Abubakar further emphasized that the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has expressed strong disapproval of the incident and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining strict discipline and integrity within all correctional facilities nationwide. He stressed that misconduct of any kind will not be tolerated under his leadership.

“The Service categorically states that any personnel found engaging in acts of misconduct, corruption, or sabotage will be shown the way out of the system,” Abubakar warned.

This suspension marks a broader push by the Ministry of Interior to promote accountability and transparency across its agencies. It also highlights the growing role of digital monitoring tools in identifying corrupt practices within public service institutions.

The statement concluded with a reassurance to the public that the Nigerian Correctional Service remains committed to reform and will not hesitate to take necessary action against any breach of conduct within its ranks.
