Senate President Akpabio Says Wike Deserves Daily Celebration
Senate President Akpabio hails Wike’s leadership in Abuja, calling him worthy of daily national praise.
He also urged opposition parties to restore unity, stressing democracy thrives with vibrant political competition.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, saying he deserves to be celebrated every single day for his contributions to national development.
Akpabio made the remark on Tuesday while commissioning the newly completed Arterial Road N20 Interchange Bridges in Abuja, a project executed under Wike’s leadership in the FCT. The project is part of the federal government’s ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and ease traffic congestion in the capital city.
While acknowledging Wike’s performance as FCT Minister, Akpabio said, “This is the kind of result we expect when people with a proven track record are given responsibilities. Wike has demonstrated that leadership is about action, not just talk. He should be celebrated on a daily basis.”
The Senate President also used the occasion to speak on recent political developments in the country, particularly the growing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the weakening of the opposition in general. He referred to the internal disagreement within the PDP over the position of the National Secretary and the recent defection of Senator Neda Imasuen from the Labour Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Imasuen currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions.
Akpabio revealed that President Bola Tinubu was not pleased with the current state of the opposition, describing the president as a democrat who values political competition.
“However you people got yourself into this confusion, try and get yourself out of it very quickly,” Akpabio said. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is interested in seeing a vibrant opposition. As a true democrat, he would like to see a very active and organized opposition in the country.”
He added that the president becomes concerned whenever he observes the disunity and weakening structures among opposition parties, as it undermines the essence of democracy.
Akpabio’s comments come at a time when political realignments are taking place ahead of the 2027 general elections, with defections and internal party wranglings affecting both the PDP and the Labour Party.
The event concluded with applause for the completed road project, seen as a major step toward improving transportation in Abuja.
