CAF honours Onome Ebi for her lasting impact and unmatched record in Women’s Africa Cup history.
The veteran Super Falcons defender remains a true icon of resilience, leadership, and continental success.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has paid tribute to former Super Falcons captain, Onome Ebi, for her outstanding legacy and remarkable longevity in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

In a feature published on its official website, CAF hailed Ebi as one of the most iconic players in the tournament’s history. The Nigerian center-back holds the distinction of being the most capped player in WAFCON, having featured in seven editions of the tournament: 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2022.
“In the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, few players can compete with the longevity and impact of Onome Ebi,” CAF wrote. “She remains the most capped player of the tournament, with seven appearances to her credit.”
CAF praised Ebi’s consistent performances over the years, noting her crucial role as a defensive stalwart for the Super Falcons. Her contributions helped Nigeria secure four WAFCON titles in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018, reinforcing her status as one of the continent’s most decorated players.
“Across generations, opponents, and styles of play, she established herself as a central figure in the Super Falcons, an essential defensive pillar, and a model of consistency,” the statement read.
Beyond her WAFCON feats, Ebi’s international career also includes participation in five FIFA Women’s World Cups, with over 100 appearances for Nigeria. Her leadership, both on and off the pitch, has earned her deep respect within African football.
“Each time, Ebi held her ground, solid on her feet, lucid in her reading, sober in her attitude. A natural leader, respected and listened to. Her consistency at the highest level commands respect,” CAF added.
The tribute comes as the 41-year-old continues to inspire younger generations of African footballers with her professionalism, resilience, and enduring excellence.
Ebi, who made her Super Falcons debut in 2003, remains a symbol of pride for Nigeria and a benchmark of longevity in women’s football. Her legacy is not just written in titles and caps but in the leadership and passion she brought to every match.
