Ryan Mason Takes the Helm at West Brom on Three-Year Deal After Mowbray Exit

Ryan Mason has been appointed West Brom’s new manager on a three-year deal, aiming to guide the club back to Premier League glory after recent struggles.

The 33-year-old ex-Spurs assistant arrives with high expectations, following a turbulent season that saw four managers and a narrow miss of playoff success.

West Bromwich Albion have officially appointed Ryan Mason as their new manager on a three-year contract, marking a bold step in the Championship club’s bid to return to top-flight football. The announcement, made on Monday, follows the dismissal of Tony Mowbray, who was let go after just three months in charge.

Mason, 33, joins the Baggies from Tottenham Hotspur, where he served as assistant manager to Ange Postecoglou during their impressive Europa League-winning campaign. A product of Spurs’ youth academy and a former first-team midfielder, Mason had previously stepped in as interim head coach at Tottenham in both 2021 and 2023, earning widespread praise for his leadership and professionalism during turbulent periods at the club.

West Brom chairman Shilen Patel expressed strong confidence in Mason’s capabilities, stating that the decision came after an extensive and careful selection process.

“We have undertaken a thoughtful and expansive search, and Ryan always stood out to us among an incredibly strong group of candidates,” Patel said. “We are excited to have someone whose skill set means he has the aptitude to help us further establish elite standards in both preparation and player development for the first team and across all our team programs.”

The Championship side, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2021, ended the most recent season in ninth place, narrowly missing the playoff spots by just four points. Their campaign was marred by managerial instability, as they cycled through four different coaches over the course of the season. Carlos Corberán, who had led the team for two years, departed in December to join La Liga outfit Valencia. Chris Brunt temporarily replaced him, before Mowbray returned to the Hawthorns in January for a second stint at the club.

Mowbray’s return, however, was short-lived. The former Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough manager oversaw a disappointing run of results and was dismissed following a 3-1 home loss to Derby County. James Morrison then stepped in as caretaker in April to steer the club through the final stretch of the season.

Despite their turbulent year, West Brom managed to secure a playoff position in the 2023–24 season but fell short in the semi-finals, losing to Southampton.

Mason now takes over with the challenge of building a consistent and competitive side capable of pushing for promotion next season. With his Premier League experience and strong reputation for nurturing young talent, the club hopes the former Spurs man can bring both stability and success back to the Hawthorns.
